Pressure under PCMCIA slots causes T40 to 'Reset'

#1 Post by lilserenity » Mon Feb 05, 2007 7:09 am

Hello,

Found an unnerving issue with my T40 over the weekend.

Picked it up from the front left corner one handed (not the best idea I appreciate) and the machine sort of 'reset', in so far as the screen dimmed, you could hear the hard disk power down and power up again, but the keyboard and ultranav became unresponsive but what Windows was doing continued.

Now I don't plan on always picking up my laptop like that but is this usual, seems to indicate a hairline crack in the mainboard for that kind of activity.

I narrowed it down to about underneath the PCMCIA slots, around where the CPU/northbridge is I think.

Is this usual? The machine is perfect otherwise apart from the crappy 2100B WiFi and as I say I don't like to pick up my laptop one handed anyway.

Thanks in advance :)

T40 chassis lack the sturdiness later T4x models had. You should carry the laptop with both hands, the problem is caused by the motherboard (when flexed, the laptop resets)

Seems to be a fair enough answer. I don't make a habit of picking up any laptop with one hand, but I was just a little bit disconcerted when I did this once yesterday. If I pick it up one handed from the rear or front right it's fine.

Either way it's sturdy in all the other ways that count like the rear of the display etc.

The T23 I admit was a tank but I guess some flexing is bound to happen the thinner things get. The PowerBook G4 12" had an unnerving knack of getting slightly 'buckled' and wouldn't sit perfectly flat.

Either way in every use except picking it up with that kind of strain this is one [censored] fine laptop. Runs really well too with just 512MB RAM and the 5400RPM HD.
