Help me decide between two T42s
Help me decide between two T42s
I'm trying to decide which T42 is best for me and I'd like to check my thinking with the experts here. I'll use it mostly for office work -- PowerPoint, Word, Excel -- and web surfing.
Both models are similiar (14" XGA, 40G, Intel b/g) except for the following:
2378-DUU: 1.5Ghz, 7500 graphics
2379-5VU: 1.6Ghz, 9000 graphics
After upgrading both to 512MB and the 3yr depot/TPP warranty, the 2379 will cost me about $100 more, and is listed as 2 to 4 weeks availability vs. in stock for 2378. Is it worth the extra wait and money? I'm not sure what difference the extra speed/ graphics makes with office aps, and I'm a bit confused by the Dothan and long fan issues.
Also, I'm still torn between going with depot vs. onsite for the warranty. I do freelance work from home and have a desktop as my main computer so I could be without this for a few days, as long as it wasn't the week I had to visit a client. I've read some posts that onsite can be worse, depending on the tech, and not much quicker than depot. If it helps, I live between Philly and Allentown and think there is a depot center about 45" away. On-site is between $80 to $100 more for 3 years. It seems worth it, but of course all these $100 additions start to add up.
To further complicate it, IBM is offering a $45 upgrade including a 256MB USB key and the IBM leather attache. Not sure if I need the bag, but is it a good price for a key? I've never used one before, but I assume they're handy to have?
Sorry for so many questions, but there are just too many choices...
Thanks for your help!
Connie

I think the 2379 would be better for just 100 bucks more, worth the wait.
Speed is speed, it will help a bit with office apps, large ppt file, large xls files, etc... The graphics wont help with the office apps at all, but its nice if you cruze the web or look at any video.
Warranty is all about person preference. I dont care much for warranty, so i always take the cheapest one. Many feel oposite of me and get the better one. Your choice.
Yes, a memory key is very nice to have. These have totally replaced floppies and are invaluable for transporting docs / programs between machines.

FWIW, while i can not discount the 2378 or 2379 models, there are 2373 and 2374 models that i CAN discount to match the value on the express models..
and i don't add sales tax..
generally, 2378 models are 1 year warranty and 2379 models are 3 year warranty..

I'd go with the 23795VU. It uses the new Dothan Pentium M 725 1.6ghz CPU while the 2378DUU uses the older Banias Pentium M 1.5ghz CPU.
If you're interested in buying from Bill, get a quote for the 23735TU which is identical to the 23795VU except it's a non-Express version (which Bill can discount).
