I'm having the exact same problem. I initially thought it was a virus so I restored to factor specs. However the problems continues it have to try and turn it on several times in order to get it to turn on. The fan spins but nothing on the screen at all. When I do get the screen on it freezes in anywhere from 1 to 4 minutes.

Do I need to replace the harddrive?

That would be my guess. I have had a similar experience before.

I am new to the IBM scene here and not an expert. I do think though that you should at least get the IBM splash screen at start up. You can hook up a external monitor to see if its a screen problem. When I removed my hard drive to find the problem I had, I would get an error message on the screen. If it does not appear to be a screen or hard drive problem then you nead to check out message thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight= . Display problems, locking up and no starts all could be caused from a problem with your gpu. Errol, my T40 acted the same as what you described. I think this problem is more common then anybody realizes. Good Luck.

Well, Trigger is right. With only a bad hard drive, something should still appear on the display.
