T41p: High frequented sound from the hard drive 7200 rpm

#1 Post by Schems » Fri Sep 17, 2004 11:33 am

Hi,

I recently bought a T41p, model 2373-GHG. Since the hard drive made a high frequented noise, I brought the notebook back to the store to fix it.

Getting it back after 2 weeks they told me, that the noise is due to the fast hard drive with 7200 rpm.

They said, that I could bring the notebook back to the store or change the hard drive to a slower one with 5400 rpm. I haven't made up my mind yet.

What should I do?

What's your experience with the high frequented sound of the 7200 rpm hard drive? Does every fast hard drive make that noise?

I used to have a T40p (stolen) with 5400 rpm, which I really enjoyed, but this notebook gets on my nerves.

Thanks for replies.

while SOME HDD's can exhibit SOME high pitched noice, it should be barely audible..
if you can hear it above normal ambient noise thjen it is an indicator that the HDD is not well..

as for the seller of your thinkpad offering you a 5400RPM HDD in place of your 7200RPM HDD (which you have paid for) i would say to them that you bought this thinkpad with the 7200 HDD and the HDD appears to be failing and you want a new replacement 7200RPM HDD..

PERIOD..!!

be sure to back up your data..

one more thiought..
get the drive fitness test and test your HDD..
this will not always be able to predict a HDD about to fail, but it might..
in any event, BACK UP YOUR DATA..!!
