Thinkpad T42 intermitant Boot

#1 Post by mukow » Mon Feb 12, 2007 12:02 am

Hi All,

Been reading over these forums but cant see anyone else that has had the same or similar problem as me.

When turning on the laptop most of the time it will power on and the Power Light and Battery light come on, but there is no display.
I have semi-fixed this by turning off the laptop, bending/flexing the front of the laptop where the mouse pad is and turn the laptop on and it will boot. But when using the laptop if i pick it up or move it the screen will flicker. The i have to turn it off and bend it again to get it to work. I have opened up the laptop but cannot find anything specifically loose. Was wondering if anyone hashad a similar problem that they can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Tim

Specifically, the way the graphics chip (BGA = Ball Grid Array) is attached or soldered to the motherboard has been identified as the source of these problems. The solder connections break over time, primarily from flexing. There are a number of threads regarding this issue. The following is one of the most recent, longest running threads.

(The last page of the thread lists a couple of fixes that you might be interested in trying)
