T42: problems with installing retail copy of winxp pro?

#1 Post by calebt » Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:20 pm

I just got my t42 (2378DTU) yesterday, and I didn't like all of the crap that comes installed by default and the partition for the rapid restore, so I decided to install of fresh copy of winxp pro from a retail CD.

So I installed it, and on the part where you set up the initial accounts, I decided to unplug from the AC and just go on battery power and finish the install process.

Right when I unplugged the power cord from the laptop, I got a BSOD with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL error (or something like that). I restarted and windows started normally. After that, I got 2 more BSODs while running on battery power.

So basically what I want to ask: Should I be able to install a fresh copy of winxp, or do I have to stick with the IBM version? I installed all of the drivers from IBM web site. I did notice that it still didn't detect the USB correctly (it said drivers weren't installed).

Can anyone provide me with some guidance? I plan to do another fresh install when I get home today while totally running on AC power to see if that helps, but i don't think it will.

Yeah, sounds like the transient in the computer circuitry corrupted a file that was installing when you unplugged it. Another 2 hour clean install will be you punishment for unplugging your computer while installing the OS

The OS was finished installing. I was at the point where you're just doing configuration -- setting up the user accounts and setting up the network.

I'd think what 'sktn77a' said still applies - At that point the computer is already under the OS and it has some smarts to figure out AC/battery changes - Hence, the corruption...

Re-installing never fails - Ok, it does...But, for MS tech support, "re-install a fresh OS" seems to be the solution for everything. Believe you me, I've gotten that response plenty of times...From Dell, from IBM, etc, etc...

Well, remember that IBM does have some special power-management driver that you have to install after the OS is on. If you don't you have an unknown device in devmgr. When/if you install the battery maximiser thing it requires that driver to be in there as well.

That's the only thing i can think of is that it got [censored] because you didn't have the driver on yet. *shrug*

Isn't it interesting that trying to get rid of "all that crap" as you called it causes you all this trouble...there's a moral in there somewhere.

I do not, never have, and probably never will understand this issue.

"All that crap" as you call it amounts to a hill of beans on a large hard drive. And "all that crap" includes power management software that works reliably and Access Connections, the newest version of which (3.3) is finally an excellent piece of software. Even the new ThinkPad Configuration Utility consolidates a number of BIOS settings and values and provides ultra-easy lookup inside of Windows. IBM is gradually fixing Software Installer which, at the least, provides informaton on Driver and Application status.

Anyways, I am *exceedingly* happy with my IBM T41, IBM, "All that crap" and the whole nine yards. "All that crap" is a pittance, a drop in the bucket" compared to the 4.1Gb of general file storage, 8.7Gb of virtual machines (5 machines), and 700Mb of formal document storage.

And I still have 29Gb of free space.

I think in the last install I forgot to install the power managment driver. I'm running on the new install, and I think I have all the drivers installed now. I guess we'll just have to see how well it works out.

Yeah, I probably should have kept the default install, but I guess I'm just really picky about what's on my computer.

Hi, I also kept the IBM Installation and I only made minor changes like

uninstall DLA (because I had problems reading DVD-Rs)
changed wallpaper :)
put SP2 and my programs
upgraded the BIOS and the Embedded Controller set

but I am happy that I kept most of the IBM programs and the install. I am pretty good with PCs, but I tend to think that a team of Thinkpad engineers have more clue about what to put on this particular machine than I could ever figure.
