HELP!!!

#1 Post by t43er » Mon Feb 12, 2007 7:42 pm

Hi Guys, I'm having problem to get my external hdd detected by my laptop. Well I've tried using my friends laptop as well but it just couldn't detect the hdd! It just stucked in the process of the new hardware detected loop! The problems starts when I discover there are some bad sectors in my hdd. I tried to run the scan disk and let the computer recover the files. The process when smoothly until it stops saying an unspecific error occurs. At first the bad sector is only discovered in my D drive. But after running the scan disk, I can't even boot into XP which is in C drive! I just want to recover my stuff in the D drive! (Didn't make any backup!!) So please if you guys have any suggestions, that would be great because all my projects, notes, and basically all of my important information are stored in the D drive! Thanks for spending time on this.

Typically the CD-ROM/DVD/etc. is listed as the D: drive. If you can boot your lappie into safe mode, scan the drive for bad sectors and see if it will boot after restarting.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for not making it clear. The directory that I stored is not actually D path. I just name it for the sake of explaination. I think it's F drive. Anyway the problem is I can't even get the laptop to boot! Well it can't even detect my hdd! Right now I've swapped the hdd with my external one and restored it using the backup that I made. It's just that I didn't make any backup for the F drive. I'm just wondering if you guys can help me out so that I can at least read the data and save it elsewhere. Right now I've put the hdd in my external enclosure fyi.

do i understand correctly that now your computer won't even boot without the external drive attached?

edit: could you change the thread's subject so as to make it clear to people what kind of help you need.

Prehaps I should make it more clearer. When the hdd is connected to the laptop, the hdd activity light is blinking in green. But after some time, the color turns to orange! Under device manager, the disk is stated but it just won't work! I suspect is the spin head faulty because when I can hear a constant clicking as though it's stuck! That is if I put the hdd enclosure close to my ear!

It sounds like the disk has had a hardware failure, and the data may be difficult to recover.

You can try accessing it with another machine (you can get an adapter to put a laptop drive in a desktop) but don't expect much and if the heads have crashed every click may be chewing up more of the disk surface, rendering more data unrecoverable.

If the data is really important there are companies that can recover most or all of it for you for a price. Google data recovery

If you have the factory preload, and you press the Access IBM or ThinkVantage button on boot up, you should enter Rescue and Recovery. From there you can transfer files to another hard drive. However, if your hard drive has failed to the point where it can't enter Rescue and Recovery, then I believe your only option is to send the driver to a data recovery service, but only if the data is indispensable and worth the cost of recovery.

Thanks guys for the response. I guess I don't have any choice but to give up on the drive because it can't even reach the xp boot logo stage. I think the data recovery process would be too much for me (still studying) as all those data are my past projects, lecture notes, photos and etc. (although I might need them during interviews because I don't have the hard copy!) I can't claim for the replacement of new drive also as I'm in UK right now!

Just like the 3 cardinal rules of Real Estate: Location, Location & Location; there are 3 cardinal rules of computing: Backup, Backup & Backup. Too bad only hindsight is 20-20...
