difficult keyboard

My T42 is vintage November 2004. I was a trained typist who made few typos, until this T42 keyboard. As if my fingers swelled, I now hit extra, neighboring letters and am a lousy slow typist. On this keyboard only. No such problem on my 600X keyboard. The key dimensional differences between these keyboards is very slight. Have other T42 users had experience like mine? Has anyone figured out the cause?
Since many of the keys have lost their markings, Lenovo is kindly replacing my keyboard. I wonder if the new one will be ergonomically different.

Well, it depends on the type of keyboard that you get. There are three types available for the T4X Series of Thinkpads. Although it sounds as if you gave the one that came on yours quite the wear.

If I remember correctly, the 600 or 600E (which I assume use the same keyboards as the 600X) have deeper keys than most newer Thinkpads. This extra depth serves as a safety buffer. Another possibility is that your T42's keyboard is unusually loose. From my experience as a pianist, keyboards with loose keyboards lead to more wrong notes, because just barely touching a wrong key would make it sound.
