Incessant beeping "fixed" by removal of keyboard

#1 Post by jamnkats » Mon Feb 19, 2007 7:06 pm

We have a T30 with a dead MB (part machine), a working T30 (working on it now), a T40, a Mac and a Toshiba (not working). All laptops. A while ago, the T40 suddenly starting beeping its fool head off whenever we started it up. Sounded like a stuck key to me, so I took the keyboard out and tried a KB from a T30. The keyboard really aren't the same; don't even fit in the same, and it worked. Then I put the T40's kb back in and it worked. So I closed the case and put the screws in and the beeping began anew when I powered it on. What has fixed the T40 is to insulate the back of the keyboard from machine; I have plastic taped all over the inside of the machine and now the keyboard can sit on the case without causing incessant beeping.

I am planning to get a new keyboard off Ebay but wonder if this could be something else. Any ideas?

There's maybe a short circuit on the keyboard that triggers the beeping. BTW, are you mexican, I'm mexican and I could send you a used Thai keyboard for your T40 machine.

I'm a winter Mexican?

#3 Post by jamnkats » Tue Feb 20, 2007 12:58 am

I'm not of Mexican citizenship, but me parece que tengo el corazon Mexicano. :)

We spend winter in Mexico recorriendo el pais and summer in the US. We have 4 kids and are currently on la costa esmeralda. Tomorrow hacemos la mudanza a Xalapa. We're gonna find us some rico cafe! Desde alli, vamos al Yucatan.

I work on the Internet and am able to pretty much pay the bills while we're on the road.

I'd LOVE to get a replacement keyboard; where in Mexico are you?

I live in the northeastern part of Mexico, in a city called Saltillo in the state of Coahuila (if you know Monterrey city, then my city is about 80km southbound Monterrey.

I passed through Saltillo about 10 years ago. Nice town. At that time my family and I were returning from a driving trip to Honduras. From Brownsville, TX we went south along the coast, spending the first night in San Fernando. The next night we made it to Poza Rica, and the following night to Tapachula near the Guatemalan border. We spent the next night in Guatemala City, and ended up at relatives in Honduras on the fifth night.

On the return we spent our first night again in Guatemala City, and the second in Tonalá, México. From there we drove through the state of Oxaca which was my favorite part of the trip. Very scenic desert area with a large variety of cacti I had never seen before. We had alternator trouble shortly before arriving in Nochixtlán the following night, which was a Friday. Fortunately we did make it to Nochixtlán before the battery died, and we were able to get the alternator replaced the next day. That night, Nochixtlán was having an annual fiesta and we had a great time. We had a late start leaving Nochixtlán Saturday afternoon, and only made it as far a Izucar de Matamoros. From there we went through Cuernavaca (the home of a former amante mia), through Ciudad de México, and spent the next night in Matehuala. After we left Matahuala, we drove through Saltillo, having lunch there. We spent our final night in México at Piedras Negras.

Oh we know Saltillo! We love the Los Lirios area and Santiago. A bit of a drive coming from Saltillo but very worth it. We've never been to Monterrey and have no desire.

And GomJabber; we spent our first night in San Fernando (de las Presas?) this trip, stayed at El Tajin (close to Poza Rica) and have just come off 3 weeks on the Emerald Coast. We're heading to Oaxaca this year (FINALLY) and expect we'll fall in love with Oaxaca just as much as the rest of the country.

You can see where we've gone here http://www.hopalog.com

So, Benottomex; why don't you email me at jamnkats at gmail dot com with details. I'm also not sure how you will get it to us; we'll actually be going through Saltillo but not untiil July or so. My folks are coming down in March for a visit and they can bring us stuff from the US, which is why I've been watching fleabay.

Well, it looks like the problem may be much more than a keyboard. Now the PCMCIA slots don't work (only one worked before) and the audio sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The USB ports are physically damaged and 1/2 the touchpad does not work.

Does anyone know if this lappy is worth saving? If so, would a new motherboard (and maybe a keyboard also) cure its woes? Is it difficult to replace a lappy motherboard?

It will take you the first time more or less three hours, and you will need to study the HHM first.

thanks. Do you think that replacing the mobo will fix all (but the keyboard) woes? I know it is extremely subjective, but just wondering...

Why don't you run pc doctor first?

pc doctor 5

It may help you diagnose if it is really the motherboard.

Se que te va a ayudar.
