I had also dissapointments in bikes (for example), I simply ditched the brand and go for something higher (Giant).
In the case of Thinkpads, newer machines are more noisy. The only choice is to have the processor undervolted or Dynamic Switching. Have you tried underclocking the GPU ?

I'm already using TPFancontrol and tried different settings with the Power Profile, RMClock, NHC, Powerplay etc.

Yesterday I experimented with ATITool to underclock the GPU, it's to short to draw conclusions yet, but the first results are promising.

I only wish the machine to keep quiet during normal usage (browsing the internet, office work etc.)..

I can't help but ask: it seems to me that running two programs to control the same parameters (i.e., RMClock and NHC) might be causing some of your problem . . . Are you running them both at the same time? or did you first try one and then the other?

I have NCH running with the add-on IBM ACPI module on a T42 (see sig). CPU is 35C; HD is 32C. No fan noise to speak of

is there an add on ACPI module for a T41. Right now I have mine running at 38-40c on fan setting 1 and around 46c at 0 on idle.

kid8,

are you running NHC? if so you can download Shimodax's ACPI module here: http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/tpfcserv.zip. Inside that folder is another called tpfc4nhc.zip. Everything you need is in there. Please read the readme.txt file and follow all the steps (especially the one about substituting YOUR machine model number!). I refer you to the thread "Thinkpad Fan Noise Problem: Light at the end of the tunnel": http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=17715 for more details than you probably want! But some well worth knowing. I'm pretty sure this works for the entire T4x family. Have fun,

Paul
