Rattling noise from fan

#1 Post by MichaelMeier » Tue Feb 27, 2007 7:43 am

Hello!

My T42p is around 2 and a half years old by now. All of a sudden I noticed a rattling noise when the fan is running with its slowest speed. I used the fan control program to manually set to the next higher speed and it is not noticable then.

Now the big question is: should I send it in for repair while the warranty (3 years) is still valid? I am really relying on the machine by now and sending it in is such a pain and it might take at least a few days to get it back from repairs.

Is it possible, the support would send me a fan replacement so I could quickly change it myself and be up and running (silently) again?

Any information or past similar experiences appreciated.

I have a rattling fan on my T43 also. The rattle is more noticeable at lower fan speeds. And seems to vary sometimes when I tilt the laptop back and forth.

It developed this rattle after a year of heavy use. I have pulled out the keyboard and looked at the fan assembly, blown all the dust off it, to no avail. (I did not pull the fan assembly apart tho).

I will send it into warranty repairs as soon as I move all the stuff off it. It is thankfully no longer my primary machine.

Good luck with getting yours fixed.

Hallo,

I've almost the same problem. My T42p is 2 and a half years old and the fan now rumbles at low-medium speed.
I called a repaire center here in Italy, and they told that they can't send me a new fan and I should give them my TP for almost 10 days. I'm not sure now, on what to do.
The noise is disturbing but I can't stay without my PC for such a time.

Don't know if they will do that or not. I've heard of them sending out various parts for users to replace themselves, so it can't hurt to ask. If they can't send you a replacement fan, there's another option: eBay or here in the Marketplace.

I've checked the hardware manual for the T4x. It looks to be fairly easy to get at the fan assembly. However, generally speaking, most warranties are void if the user opens up the system. You might want to determine this before performing the surgery.
