Hard drive upgrade

#1 Post by murray1 » Sat Mar 03, 2007 10:35 pm

I recently acquired a T40 and am trying to upgrade it so that it is a little faster. I am planning on upgrading my hard drive and it sounds like the 7k100 is the way to go. I am wondering

1) Does size have any effect other then over all space i.e. 100 vs 80 vs 60 gig?
2) I have seen a fair bit on the 7k60 also how does it compare?
3) HITACHI-OEM-NOTEBOOK 2.5" 100.0GB IDE 7200 RPM 8MB HARD DRIVE 0A25015 is a 7k100 correct?
4) How much temperature and noise difference does it make going to the bigger faster hard drive? I have read conflicting information on these two topics so please only reply to this if you have actually done a hard drive upgrade.

Thank you for any help, I just want to make sure that I make the right decision.

#1: The size does matter although much more so for the SATA drive versions than for the PATA drive versions which are what you need. The 100gb is the fastest but I doubt you would notice the difference in actual use, especially with the PATA drive. Get the size you want or need and don't worry about it.

#2: I had a 7k60 in my X32 which I swapped out for a 7K100, 100gb version. I can't say I notice the difference. Current draw and heat are supposedly marginally better in the 7K100 vs. 7K60, and service life is longer in the 7K100, but again the likelihood this will actually help you in anyway is a longshot.

#3: I think your part number is correct but I'm too lazy to check. There is only one 7K100 version, in different sizes, for PATA drives. Just don't get the #E7K100 version which is not intended for laptop use.

#4: Negligible. I've upgraded 2 systems with these drives and had one of them in a 3rd as supplied. Unless you are really anal about this sort of thing you will not notice it one way or the other.
