Wireless shows connected but it isn't ???? [solved]
Clicking through various options I finally got things working. I think it might have been something like "Set Internet options" but am not sure.
Hello!
I'm on my second day with my T42 (23736vu) and, for the life of me can't get wireless to work (it's got the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection). The wireless connection icon shows "Connected" and I can ping the router but can't get outside to the internet (IE6 doesn't see any connection). I even called support on this and was told to uninstall Access Connection software (guy said Windows was better for a home user). The guy also said, given that wireless shows connected it's really "Bill's problem" (i.e., Mr. Gates) & he could give me the number of Microsoft support! After waiting on hold 10 minutes, he came back with a ref to Microsoft knowledge base article #244268. Article seemed totally irrelevant to my issue (it was for Windows 2000).
It also bothers me that just a couple weeks ago I bought a $700 Toshiba from Circuit City (for someone else) and wireless worked out of the box, both before & after SP2. I'm posting in case anyone has any ideas as I'm spending lots of time trying to figure this out. I might also add that right now I'm just going for an "unsecured" connection (i.e., no WEP or WPA or anything; that will come later).
Well, it'd be nice to get useful clues but, if not, I'll post resolution (more hours to solve or return to IBM).

Sometimes it's just a hardware problem. I've been chasing my tail over the fact that I can no longer access my .11b Belkin WAP from any of my laptops or my desktop, but have no difficulty connecting to my .11g Linksys router.ian wrote:If you've upgraded to SP2 do you think it might be simply a firewall problem?
I can connect to two different neighbors' .11b networks, but my .11b WAP fails to negotiate an IP address and I get the "connected but not usable" window under XP SP2.
Belkin is sending me a new WAP under their lifetime warranty.
Regards,
James

Having firewall enabled should make no difference (I configured the Toshiha XP SP2 laptop with firewall & it worked). I also updated bios, drivers, & software on the laptop & router (Linksys WRT54G). Noted another post in the forum where the guy had a new 2200 card sent & it solved the problem. I might ask for that soon (but think I'll try: reinstall drivers from Windows & then Access Connections software).ian wrote:If you've upgraded to SP2 do you think it might be simply a firewall problem?
