2373-3vu Bluetooth Antenna-does it have?

#1 Post by teknerd122 » Wed Sep 22, 2004 4:33 pm

So the Apple thing didn't work out because their latest equipment has shoddy craftsmanship. Anyhow, I'm now interested in the 2373-3VU ($2159), but I really want bluetooth. Is there a spec sheet or something that I might be directed to? I have no qualms about installing the b/t card...but the antenna is a whole 'nother kettle of fish! I would go for the 2373-3UU, but it has a smaller hard drive (not a big deal, since I can probably upgrade it cheaper on my own) and it isn't sold through my school's bookstore. So yeah...help please? Thanks!

May I ask where you found that price for that model? I don't see it on IBM's site under the express models unless I missed it.

What are you going to use bluetooth for? A USB adapter is $25. Just get one and pull it out when you need it.

My guess is that 90% of the people who want it - don't even have anything for it to talk to.

rocketman: The price for the 2373-3VU is through Stanford U. The 2373-3UU is $1958 through California community colleges (I think).

awolfe63: I was hoping to get the computer to talk to my cell phone and pda, which are bluetooth-enabled devices. I'm also looking into buying a bluetooth mouse for school, since I will be spending a great deal of time sitting in the library w/ the computer on a large desk. My friend has a DLink USB dongle that he offered me, but I'm getting it for free because it doesn't work on his computer (he says that everytime it is plugged in it asks to be reconfigured...anyhow I thought that it would be rather annoying...maybe it's just the dongle that's broken? He's pretty Windows-savvy, so I figure that it's either the hardware or he's just being really lazy).

Anyhow...Can someone point me in the general direction of some specsheet I can look at, in order to determine what will be needed to upgrade a 2373-3VU to BlueTooth and what the cost will be?

A bluetooth mouse is a pain in the a** . It is heavy and you need batteries. I use a tiny little Targus USB mouse on my 2373-3VU.

I agree that BT would be nice for a phone/PDA - but where are you going to sync them and how often. Probably at home. Just keep the dongle in a drawer.

Officially - a 2373-3VU does not have a BT antenna. Installing one is non-trivial and will definitely void your warranty. There are reliable rumors that they are showing up with the antenna - in chich case BT is a simple card swap.

I wouldn't do it. I would upgrade the 2373-3UU if you think you need internal BT. 100GB drives will be available soon. But as I said - my choice was a 2373-3VU with a BT dongle.

How would swapping in a purchased-from-IBM Bluetooth CDC void one's warranty?

It wouldn't - read what I said.

Installing a BT antenna voids the warranty. If the antenna is there - the the card swap will not void the warranty.
