CPU upgrade for T41...possible?

#1 Post by darkhelmet03 » Thu Sep 23, 2004 2:20 pm

I have a P-M 1.4GHz equipped T41.
Is it possible to later (say, in a year) upgrade it to a higher MHz Banias or Dothan and which models?
Has anybody even accomplished this in the first place?

I have read somewhere that for the Dothan p-m's you have to have a i855PM revision that supports them....

Does anybody know any details?

I don't think so. You should be able to upgrade to any Banias or Dothan if you can get a recent enough BIOS. Since the thermals on Dothan are sol close to the 1.7GHz Banias that was supported - cooling should be fine.

No.

Your P-M 1.4GHz should be good for a few years anyway.....

You should be able to upgrade. It will void your warranty though.

Is it really worth voiding your warranty for a few extra 100MHz though? I think not.

you are right about the warranty but for me it's 1 year only ;)

And it is obvious that in everyday use I will still be at 600MHz, so even with a 1.7GHz banias only in heavy work I will see any difference. Though a 2GHz dothan with its 2MB L2 cache would make sense. I expect that a Dothan at 600Mhz has some advantage over banias due to the cache and some microarchitectural improvements...

Still it's good to have an option to upgrade....so I am wondering if anybody has attempted something similar...

Yes, it is :D Search this forum. One person upgraded their Banias to a Dothan (1.8Ghz, I think).
