T42: Black screen after leaving laptop on all night?

#1 Post by calebt » Thu Sep 23, 2004 7:31 pm

I haven't had any problems while I'm using my machine, but I have noticed something weird a few times:

When I go to sleep, I plug up my laptop to AC power, close the lid, then go to sleep. It seems about 1/2 of the time, when I open the lid the next day, the screen is just black. The wireless light is on, the power light is on, and the battery light is on, but nothing happens.

It's not in hibernation or standby. I changed the settings to only hibernate and go into standy when I press the power button or press fn-sleep, respectively.

Any ideas?

Go into Power Options and see whether or not you have the display set to turn off after a set period of time.

Does the display come on immediately when you touch the Trackpoint?

In the power settings, I have the display to turn off in 10 minutes when running on battery power.

On AC power, I have everything set to "never turn off".

Nothing happens when I move the touchpad, press all of the keys, press the power button, etc. I have to hold down the power button to turn off the machine then turn it back on again.

I've noticed something else a bit wierd relating to power: when I come out of suspend, the brightness is set to level 0. It takes about 15 seconds, the screen flickers, then my brightness is set back to my default level (5). I wonder if this is related somehow?

If it happens again tonight, I'll do fn-f3 to see if the lcd is just turned off for some reason. It seems like a lockup though (it's not a blue screen lockup though -- for that, I changed the settings to not reboot and just display the message until I restart).

try a CTR-ALT-DEL to see if it brings the screen back...

I can't say what your particular problem is, but my T41 does this, and I press the Fn key to get out of it. I learned by trying everything that nothing else works, but that does. I never quite understand what's going on in my T41's brain--today it's decided that when I close the case for an hour or two it's going to turn off the radio. Tomorrow it probably will have some other trick going, and the radio will be fine.

Update

#7 Post by calebt » Sat Sep 25, 2004 2:45 pm

Update: I left my lid open this time, and it locked up on the windows xp screen saver. The machine was still on, but everything just seemed to lock up. I tried pressing the function + some other keys, the power button, etc, but I had to hold the power button down to turn off the machine.

Again, the wireless light, the power light, and the battery light was on, but the machine wouldn't respond.

I still haven't had the machine lock up while I'm using it, but I'd still like to know what the problem is.

I am using my own install of windows xp pro, so I might end up calling IBM to send me the O/S reinstall CDs. I installed all of the drivers listed on IBM's web site, SP2, and all of the windows update. Other people seem to have had success installing their own copy of XP. I wouldn't think this would be the problem, but I can't rule out that possibility.

Take a look at this thread. Could be your problem.
It's a trick. Get an axe.
