rundll32.exe running amok

#1 Post by sage529 » Fri Sep 24, 2004 10:58 am

I keep having problems with rundll32. I know that its a critical part of the OS and whatnot... but every couple of days i get this problem where it takes like 95+ percent of my CPU usage and just won't do anything... and if i just let it run it never gives back my resources. Is there anything i could be doing to trigger this? I'm not sure of the inner workings of rundll32, so I can't tell if i'm doing something to cause this.

Are you using Norton Corporate Antivirus? I used to get conflict / error messages regarding rundll32 because of problems with my Norton Antivirus. You should do a Virus Scan and then possibly consider doing a "clean" install of Norton if that is what you are currently using. My error messages went away once I did a clean install.

Good luck!

Update the battery MaxiMiser software if you haven't already. One of the older versions was prone to doing exactly this. I noticed the problem because my fan was running full blast all the time, and rundll32.exe was using all my CPU, just like yours.

I had the same problem with my T41 for several months until I found this forum. I had deactivated all power saving features, screen savers, etc., and no go. I was about to throw the thing out the window.

Based on previous posts here, I deactivated the Battery Maximizer and voila - no more rundll32.exe problems. I activated the XP battery icon (which came inactivated on my Thinkpad) to replace its function.

Updating the Thinkpad's software didn't do any good for me - I tried that first and it told me I was all up to date.
