System Board Question

#1 Post by hiho » Sun Mar 18, 2007 8:07 am

My system board seemed to go a week ago due to water damage, I get the long single beep followed by a double beep. I'm tring to figure out what is the best way to fix my T42 without spending too much money. I see that most T4X system boards will fit but I still have many questions:

- How would I know if my processor will work with the system board? (could some system boards not be used with certain processor speeds)
- I tried a T40 board and installed my wireless board and I got a 1800 error on boot up. Is this correctable or do I need to buy a board that would expect to see a wireless board?
- What system performance issues would I notice if I purchase a T40 board rather then getting the regular (same as I have) replacement?

BTW I have a 2379-RHU T42.

Thanks, any help would be apprecieated. I've been all over the lenovo website and I can't seem to get any answers.

Your current cpu will work just fine.

That should be fixed when you update the BIOS to the latest.

No performance issues, the only difference would be if you got more than 32mb of video memory in the damaged motherboard because the T40 only have 32 in it.

If you use a T40 board, your memory will run at PC2100 speed

Sorry but what does that mean? Slower RAM?

Also I've seen that there are different size heat sinks as well. Mine in the T42 extends further then from what I've seen in the T40, do I need to get a new heat sink?

No the one you have will fit fine, what you will need is thermal paste for the cpu when you re-assemble the machine.

The bus on the T42 is faster and will support PC2700 RAM. PC2700 RAM put into a T40 motherboard will run at PC2100 speed. PC2100 RAM (from a T40) will work in a T42, but the bus will slow down and run at PC2100 speed. PC2100 bus speed is 266 mHz and PC2700 is 333mHz. That may affect your throughput, depending on what you do with the machine. As far as the fan, there are boards that use long fans and boards that use short fans. It depends on the graphics processor. I believe a long fan will work fine on a board that originally had a short fan.
