My screen flickers when I load a video from microsoft.com.

#1 Post by Plinkerton » Sun Sep 26, 2004 12:53 am

I have downloaded a couple of these great high-res videos from this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... wcase.aspx

When I load them in their default application, windows media player, the screen flickers black for a few seconds, almost like it's loading the video, then it plays beautifully. When I close the application, it flickers a tiny bit, and then goes back to normal. I really hope it's nothing to worry about!

Is this normal? Why does it do this?

I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2.

Thank you very much,
Plink :D

EDIT: This may be more of an issue than I thought. I just tried to adjust my screen resolution, and the screen went black and "pulsed" sort of, just like it does when I try to play those videos, but this time it wouldn't stop at all. I couldn't see anything on the screen, so I put it into hibernate. When it came out, it was still doing that. I turned it off by holding the power button. When it turned back on, the resolution was lowered on the XP intro screen, but then when I got back into the desktop, it changed back after a couple seconds.

Also, now when I play the videos, THEY LOAD FINE! The screen doesn't flicker or anything. I want to see what happens when I change the screen resolution again, to see if that's normal now, but I don't want to deal with all that crap again.

What the hell is going on? The screen turns black, and kind of pulses the black flashing. You can catch glimpses of the windows that are open, but thats it. There is a faint line in the middle of the screen also. This is very strange. All the times, other than these I have mentioned, everything works fine.

Is this an issue with the video card or something?

Thanks again.

Hmm, for some reason, this problem has gone completely away. Thank you guys so much for letting me know that I wasn't the only one having this issue. I was getting close to sending this thing back.

So for now, everything is okay, but at least I know I can try to update the dirvers if the problem comes back.

Thanks a lot! You made my day.

EDIT: Well, the problem came back, so I installed the drivers, and rebooted. Now the problem is gone again. I'm not sure whether it's because I rebooted, or because of the new drivers. I guess time will tell. I'll let you know.

EDIT #2: The problem seems to be completely gone. Hooray!

UPDATE:

The problem is still completely fixed. I guess the drivers do work, for anyone else having this problem.

This problem seems to have come back.

I have turned off overlay, which makes the problem go away when I watch a movie, but it's still there when I check the "real time status" in the Active HD Shock protection thing...

I don't know what to do. I guess I'll call Tech Support...

Darnit... :(
