T43P melting.....

#1 Post by dyoes » Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:08 pm

If I set it to max performance and play unreal tournament demo the temp wont stop going up. It got to near 80c and I quickly stopped it and chose max battery to cool it down. I have no doubt that it wouldnt stop rising though.

Whats the deal with this ive changed HS fans cleaned the CPU and GPU reapplied HS fan and this thing still sucks. Any ideas? And yes I removed the pink sheet on the T43P hs fan..

Im using a T43P long HS fan, and fan works and blows pretty fast. I got latest bios update, Artic silver 5,

I need clear cut instruction how on to make this run at least below 70c playing games. Anyone?

Oh and its around 47C when its at 800mhz

Have you checked the CPU parameters? Your idle temp is 10 degrees hotter than mine (T41 - 37C at idle). My CPU says critical temp is 93C (never got that hot) and passive upper limit is 89C (never got that hot either).

So, depending on the upper limits, your temperatures may be OK.

Have you tried undervolting the cpu?

800mhz i assume it's at idle? so.. idle at 47C that's really high... my t43 usually idles around the 32C

there must be something wrong with the heatsink contact between the cpu/gpu
and what was that pink sheet you said about that you removed? the thermal pad?? if so, then there might be your problem

Tried two different long hs fans. First tried T41P long HS fan then T43P HS fan with pink sheet, then removed pink sheet. Every time cleaned the HS,GPU and CPU, real good and then reapplied Artice Silver 5 just a thin layer over the CPU. Used a Credit card to make it nice and smooth. Seems without the pink sheet its dropped 1c at idle.

and yes it undervolted to 1.308v at 15x.

Ive taken this apart so many times now ive just about had enough, I used to praise IBM laptops until my T41 crapped out and now cant keep a T43P from overheating.

Is there different T43P HS fans?? Perhaps some that covers the whole GPU rather than 90% as mine is now.

Am im missing something really simple here?

Mine says
critical is 99c
passive is 94c

Well I've got the same cpu and with the settings at max. performance and doing nothing it runs at temps arount 66°C, but even if I play games I'havent seen it go over 80-85 yet. with me its the Gpu I'more worried about wich will go as high as 90°C.

Maybe you could just see if it really will go over 80°C. Mine gets to the high temps really fast but then stops there and stays.

[censored] 80-85 seems like suicide temps to me, but what the hell, if it craps out ill just buy a T43 mobo with the X300 perhaps that runs cooler, lol.

Whats yours undervolted to?

Not at all, I run mine on standard settings exept for TPFancontrol if I need it to be quiet, like at night or at university.

If I "underclock" it to 800MHz via the lowest power consumption setting it runs at arround 49-52°C, so I don't think yours is doing to bad.

from my experience the Powerplay Settings have a higher impact on the general temps of the TP than the CPU speed, thats why I created a hybrid Profile with PowerPlay at the lowest and CPU at the higest, for Office work witkout 3D. But the Balanced Setting is really fine, I use it most of the time.

Well Powerplay balanced is at 69c while the CPU is still undervolted at max performance. Sill not to impressed. Cant say Unreal demo really taxes the gpu so all this means little untill I use a benchmark and check the temps.

Doesnt seem like the fan is at its highest though.

I thought to post some ideas:
1. My T42p runs highest at 62C playing Toca Race Driver 3 at almost the highest definition available in the game.
2. My 745 CPU is undervolted to 1.148V (18x Multiplier) and 0.716V (6X Multiplier). Typically the CPU speed is about 44-48C using 6x Multiplier, and the TPFanControl triggers the fan at 52C (which the GPU almost always triggers first, so it should be underclocked to 70/70 using ATiTOOL.
3. I think GFX cards have a lot to do in getting the CPU becoming too hot.
4. I did use in the past Artic Silver 5, but was no content with the results, so I bought a new thermal grease called Zalman STG1 (Zalman is best known for manufacturing real quiet desktop fans). This thing is very easy to apply because is as if you were painting, it comes with a little brush and you apply the compound on the CPU core and in the HS where the CPU should contact and presto.

Another fact is that depending where you live you could get very different temp variations. For ex, in the winter, my T42p CPU only reached top 40C (downloading files, etc) but easily was in the 35-37C mark. Now that hotter days are coming I get these typical temps of 44-48C even with the 6x multiplier
NOTE: It may also affect if you have a secondary HDD attached in the Ultrabay, as I'm using right now

To your question I must confess there's another HS fan intended specifically to issue the overheating issues with T43p, it covered not only the GPU but also the northbridge chip (above the GFX chip), in this case, you could also apply AS5 in the NB chip and lower even further the temperatures inside your laptop. Don't remember the FRU, but I saw the pic on eBay.

P.S. I also dissasembled a lot of times my machine just to see if thermal grease was applied correctly. I would suggest you give a try to Zalman STG1 (Super Thermal Grease), much efficient use, I've also applied it on my desktop computer and the CPU is much more cooler now.

Well Ive only tried a T41P HS fan and a T43P HS Fan. The T43P is a better design but still isnt that great imo.
