Looking at a T-40

#1 Post by kingman99 » Sun Mar 25, 2007 6:12 pm

What do you think about this model. It will go for under $400 on Ebay?

It just sounds cheap and not that more expensive then a T-30!

Thanks

Alan

That is the machine type number for a T40

Is the seller saying it's a T42?

The T40 is a much better machine than the T30. $400 is a reasonable price for the 2373-75U which has these original specs:

P M 1.5GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Cisco 802.11b Wireless(MPCI), Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro

Looks like the HDD and the RAM have been upgraded, which is good.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

The problems with the T40 series are that 1 of the RAM slots can fail, it has (now) weak video card and from what I understand uses a P4-M CPU. That mobile P4 is hot as heck and not as efficient as a Pentium M.

What you are saying is that the T-40 is a problem machine, in fact what l have been reading here is that all ot the Thinkpads after the 600 series have their share of problems. My 600x is a gem except that it's old but at least it works like it was meant to. I'm the problem not the 6oo.

Bottomline what is the Thinkpad to buy?

I believe we're talking about the T30, not the T40..T40 has the Pentium M and the T30 has the Pentium 4-m.

Naturally you mean T30 :) But regarding the T40, the specs of what you're looking at are good for the price, however I'm sort of guessing that given the original configuration, it could be 2 x 256MB sticks instead of 1 x 512. Might be worth checking so that if you do want to upgrade to, say, 1GB, you won't need to replace both sticks.

I was tired. Yes I meant to say T30.

Hey

Thanks, l'm glad we got that straight, l missed out on a T-40 last night on a "Buy it now" because l thought twice and by the time l decided to go for it (5 minutes or less) it was gone. It was a private seller which probably is better then a reseller that gets one off lease.

That's only my humble opinion.

Thanks

Alan

A lot of those off lease laptops are usually in great condition. A good amount of them usually seem to have a RAM upgrade (if the seller didn't pull it).

I have purchased off lease laptops in the past and it would seem that most companies take really good care of their machines. Sure there is the oddball laptop which is trashed, but most reputable sellers will note that in the auction and adjust the price accordingly. That is assuming they don't just sell it for parts or repair.
