T41p, T42p and T43p users: how's the performance? ("ben

#1 Post by Troels » Tue Mar 27, 2007 11:18 am

Hello,

I'm probably buying a new or used thinkpad sooner or later, but i want to know something about the graphics performace of it,

so i'll ask you to:

1) Download this demo: http://plastic.fork.pl/finalAudition_by_plastic.zip (12.2MB)
or try the link(s) at http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=18766 ([download])

2) Unpack to any folder and run "demo.exe" with the following settings:

2.a) Screen Mode: 1024x768 32 bpp
Frequency: 60 hz or whatever is possible.
Antialising: None
Anisotropy: None
Depth Shadow Map Size: 256x256

3) Tell me how smooth this runs.

Thank you in advance. :)
I'm trying to figure out if more video memory will help performance or not, etc..
I already know how this runs on a 64 MB radeon mobility.

T60 users are also very welcome (x1300 and up)

The program says:

"Sorry but your graphics does not meet the requirements!
Check "Diagnostics" panel for explanation."

then: EXT_framebuffer_object: NOT_FOUND

No idea what that means, but might have to do with the firegl drivers.

Ouch... that was one thing i didn't think of... ATis main priority isn't exactly OpenGL.

That error is due to outdated OpenGL 2.0 drivers (or lack of them), it has been available since Catalyst 5.9, but i'm not sure if that works with the FireGLs.

Thanks for trying at least :P

I must note that I havent got the newest drivers installed due to some problems with powerplay.

ok I just tried this on my T42p / 2.1 Ghz P-M / Ati FIREGL T2 128mb

It runs choppy, but not like a slideshow. I would guess it`s between 4-5fps and 15fps, depending on the scene that is shown.

Does this information help you? see detailed machine specs below in my signature

Yes, thanks that was very helpful!
Seems like it requires mainly pixel pipelines and ram, and that the extra 64MB really does make a difference.

I ran it at 1400x1050 and the opening scene of those weird kinda rounded interlinked triangle things was choppy. The rest of the demo seemed to hover right around 12-18fps.

By dropping the res down to 1024x768 or 800x600 made a bid difference.

I did not take the time to benchmark the differences between 0x anti-antialiasing and 16xAA.

That kind of demo would run smooth on a T60p methinks. My desktop machine ran it nice and smooth as well. However is has a dual core Pentium D 930 3GHz x 2 plus an ATI X1600PRO with 512MB of RAM and 3GB of RAM. Created a RAM drive, and ran it from there.

Very nice! :)
Do you remember if the interlinked arms/triangles still was choppy at 800x600?

It was smoother at 800x600. Noticeably so, however there were still a few minor hiccups. If I re-run it again at 800x600 it picks up even more speed. Just like any program you you close then re-open. It runs faster.

I'd say at 800x600 you would be looking at the high teens to low twenties as far as FPS is concerned.
