T40P vs T60

T40P vs T60

Hello!

Please help me to chose laptop. I am information architect / graphic designer (so Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Visio are my key software).

I have only to chooses: Thinkpad t40p or Thinkpad t60.

I will mostly use it with additional LCD monitor connected.

Please help :)

welcome to the thinkpad owners club.. :)

well, a T40 was a really nice thinkpad..
it is a bit long in the tooth (i.e. old) now..
and there are no new ones available..

the T60 is MUCH better..
faster and more up to date..

it all depends on your ability to get either one in poland..
and your available budget..

My boss gave me alternative:
- used t40p
- new t60 (basic model, not p)

Both are available.

In between T40p and T60, my choice would be T60 for a graphics intensive usage.

The T60 is definitely more powerful than the T40p. Being much newer, it may also have more warranty left and may stay healthy for a longer time. The only (small) advantage that the T40p has is that it's probably slightly lighter. But it sounds like you always use it on a desk anyway, so the weight shouldn't matter.

In summary, get the T60!

What graphics card and screen does the T60 come with? If it is XGA and GMA950 forget it and grab the T40p instead.
Depends on your usage of course, but impressively few people feel the real world difference between dual core and single core, i believe. Not anyone i know can tell the difference with the everyday tasks at least.

Judging by your uses, and saying that the T60 has GMA950 and/or an XGA screen, the T40p will be the only productive choice for you.

The OP uses Photoshop a lot, and I suspect the difference between Pentium M and Core Duo would be quite obvious in this case.

Hi everyone! This is my first post here :)

Go back to the topic. For me the key points are:
1) you are going to use external screen (most of the time)
2) you are going to use software which is cpu power hungry

The time of dualcore cpus is coming (I am talking about optimizations for dual core cpus on a software level) and you will definitely have benefits in the near future if not at this point of time.

To conclude: I would go with T60

I have a nice T42p. I recently configured a new HP laptop running xp pro with a 1.66 ghz c2d processor and 1 gig ram with a 5400 rpm hd, intel GMA graphics, for my wife. Let me tell you, this lowly HP just absolutely blew my T42p away with speed in every department. Video was much better on the HP. Every program I tried loaded and ran noticeably faster. The only thing my TP had on it was the screen resolution. Now I lust for a C2D machine and my T42p feels like a slug.

I chose:

ThinkPad T60 T7200 with:
- 2GHz CPU
- 1GB RAM,
- 100GB 7200rpm HDD,
- 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD,
- 128MB ATI Radeon X1400,

Hehe... that was the only correct choice actually. Nice Thinkpad, but i wouldn't call that a 'basic model' :)
