Audio out on port replicator II hooked up to a T40p

#1 Post by unkle77 » Thu Mar 29, 2007 8:18 am

Hello Guys.

this is my first post.

I've had my trusty t40p for 4+ years now, a wonderful machine.

The problem I have:

I have a port replicator II hooked up to my denon receiver, to
stream audio or play itunes. I prefer the itunes interface instead
of hooking up my ipod directly to the stereo. When I do this,
I get a really bad whine tone over the stereo speakers.

But when I hook up the audio cable directly to the t40p, the
whiny noise is gone.

Do you think if I hook up a noise filter to the replicator, that
will help?

Thank you.

A low pass finter wiill improve the noise problem but it will also eliminate any audio at and above the whine frequency and should cause some rolloff of frequencies below the whine.

I'd expect any whine to vary in frequency a bit as you do different stuff on the machine if its being generated by the Thinkpad. I have this effect on a small TV located near a system I use.

I'd also try using a couple of different headsets connected to both the replicator port and the system to see if you can replicate the problem. Also try hooking up headphones to the far end of the cable you use to connect the system to your Denon. Try a different input port on the Denon too.

The simplest problem could be a poor connection when using the output port on the port replicator. Try wiggling the connector and see if it changes the whine.

Usually a loud whine tone is associated with feedback through a microphone. Launch Windows Volume Control and verify that the microphone is muted. You may have to check the settings under: Options > Properties > both Playback and Recording.
