Is 950 euros too much for a secondhand t40?

#1 Post by Splash » Tue Sep 28, 2004 2:38 pm

I'm about to buy a second-hand thinkpad t40 with the following specs for 950 euros ($1170). Do you think I am paying too much?

* 1,5 Ghz Centrino processor (Pentium M)
* 512 DDR RAM
* 40 GB harde schijf
* DVD ROM 8 speed
* 32 MB ATI RADEON 7500
* 14.1 Inch screen

I mailed a little with the bidder, he claims 3-5 hours battery life, no dead pixels and no scratches.

Also, i'm a little worried about the videocard and gaming. I know i won't be able to play the newest games and I don't mind, but when I think about games like jedi knight 2 and/or mafia? Will they be playable?
Also, can sombody say somthing about the sound that te t40 produces, is it really that bad?

Tnx in advance,

Simon (Holland).

ThinkPad's are not gaming machines, it's not what they are made for.

However, the 32 MB ATI RADEON 7500 will be fine for games like Unreal Tournament 2003, Half Life and C&C: Generals but forget about any games that require serious power. The 7500 isn't really optimised for 3D gaming.

Ok, tnx, that's all i needed to know about the 3d-card. I wasn't planning on playing doom 3 on it anyway ;) I just want to have the possibility to game a little every now and then, and i see from your post that that will be perfectly possible.
(although i seriously doubt that UT 2003 will run at acceptable frame-rates...)

It ran fine on my older T40 although don't expect 60fps :lol:

Ok, that's a relief :)
Being a (former?) t40 owner, can you tell me if the sound quality and volume is really as bad as stated here? (bottom of page)

It's not great but it's not as bad as that review makes out. I can only assume the reviewer was on crack or something.

For home use I have use an external sub & speakers, they are essential for music & gaming.

I own a T30(for work use)/T40/T40p/T42(all personal) and as with all other ThinkPad's they are meant for business use so you need to spend some money to get decent stereo sound.

The price is at the top of the used range (in the US) for T40 with those specs and a DVD/CDRW and intel 2100 wireles card. But I don't know what the Europen market is like - I hear everything is more expensive over there :?

you will not be slowed down significantly in last years games. the volume issue is worth pausing over but an external usb soundcard (comp usa is selling the 24-bit aurillium for example at half price) would be a good thing. the native 60 hertz refresh rate of the lcd is curious but overrideable, perhaps with some kinda backlash down the road ...

What an understatement that is! The pricing in Europe is ridiculous.
