T41p Broken Palmrest

#1 Post by Dead1nside » Sat Mar 31, 2007 6:38 pm

Hi,

Well after having a crack appear to the right of the right arrow key, I've had another one appear directly below the gap in the touchpad left/right click buttons, well down from there anyway. I don't think it's cracked the base.

Unfortunately I'm out of warranty now, is there a way I can order a new palmrest here in the UK. Is it quite easy to fit? I wish I'd bought that waterfield sleeve now.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah, the palmrest is very easy to replace. You can get this from Lenovo.com, or you can look for it in eBay. The beauty about Thinkpads is that they are so easy to maintain, this extends the life of a Thinkpad laptop far beyond that of other brands. Just get a new part, and replace. Look for the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T41p. This will show you step-by-step instructions to replace your palmrest. And stop banging the poor thing like you're an 800 pound gorilla. :)

:) I should treat it right, it's rugged looks deceived me. I'm surprised it's held up so well. Thanks for your help.

Here's to build quality remaining the same.

The part numbers are (with touchpad) 91p8398 or 41v9155.

The cracking palm rests are a known issue with these laptops. IBM/Lenovo has issued a service bullitin about this (Document id: MIGR-65994 if you can find it).

You might try calling IBM / Lenovo and requesting a replacement part since this is a known issue.

My original palm rest cracked in that same place. Is there a new part that is less susceptible to cracking?

Which? Tracing down from the space in between the left and right click buttons under the touchpad? Or to the right of the right cursor key?

I had this happen to me as well, in the same place. just right at the junction where the palmrest and the hard drive cover edge to the corner of the keyboard.

it just broke on the palmrest part, leaving the corner portion where the screw holds that side, thus allowing you to lift the whole upper right corner of the palmrest up. very annoying for me. :P

I bought the palmrest and replaced it no problems.
