To Hard Drive protect or not to Hard Drive protect...

#1 Post by Lmax » Sat May 22, 2004 12:26 am

I am sitting here typing on my new T41p in my lap and the HD protection thing keeps comming up every few minutes. Then sometimes I move and it doesnt come up at all, go figure. I have it set where "repetative movements" shouldn't make it engage. It seems almost too sensitive. But I will keep it on for fear that I am a clutz. I guess you can turn off the little window by checking the "don't show this again" box and it will work behind the scenes, but I would kinda like to know when it is doing something. I know you can kinda hear it go on and off in a quiet room. I would hate to see how the thing performs in a car or plane, if it can't take it on my lap on the old couch, goodness. Great idea but personally I have used laptops for many years and have never managed to crash a hard drive and those never had HD protection of course.

Anyway, how many of you use this thing, and how many of you have it disabled?

i leave it on all the time..

works in the background just fine..

you can set the sensitivity in the control applet..
AND watch it work as well..
see your thinkpad move on screen as you move it in your hands..
(don't drop it!) :)

Yea set the sensitivity lower.. then it's perfect imo. You have to update the driver though (ibm website).

you can find ALL you need to know about most any thinkpad through this link to the ibm web site..

this is for a T42, but all you need do is insert your M/T number to the right..

Bill, Akerman, I just updated the driver and adjusted it to the middle sensitivity. It works perfect. My only question is, is this still enough protection to prevent any damage to the HD? I think small movements in my lap by adjusting my legs every now and then is not enough to damage the drive. Right?

Nevertheless, everyone should update this driver. BTW, the link you gave Bill does not show this driver update, you have to do a search for it on the Downloads and Drivers page. But you have been a great help. Thanks.
