[T42] (Solved) Very peculiar wifi problem...

#1 Post by kramed » Mon Apr 02, 2007 6:53 pm

Hi there,

So my wifes Windows XP networking support decided to just stop working on Sunday on her T42 (my old system). I thought to myself well enough, its almost been 2 years on one XP install, thats pretty decent. So over the past couple days I have restored the IBM to its original factory state. First I started downloading the Windows critical updates (85 to be exact. haha thats insane) and then went to Lenovo's site to get software installer. So I had a hard time finding this tool that I have used in the past. The old System Update never worked properly or at all. So I guess that Software Installer is depreciated (I use Slackware Linux exclusively on my T43) and install System Update 3, even though T42 was not listed as supported. It installed without problems and updated my software flawlessly (I later found software installer also but it listed the same updates that I already had installed).

So here is my problem. As the system is now, the wireless LED is on and windows native wireless support lists my access point. I can even connect to it. HOWEVER, I want to use IBM's Access Connections software. It makes my life easier by connecting to configured APs for my wife automatically. Access Connections seems to have a problem interfacing with the card. It reports wireless is off when it is indeed enabled and functioning. I have disabled Windows wireless configuration but access connections still has problems. I checked driver versions on the Lenovo site to see if System Update loaded the wrong driver but all was fine, drivers were up to date and installed correctly.

I would appreciate anyone that can give me some advice as to how I can fix this or narrow my problem.

I called IBM support today. Luckily I got someone who was helpful (I love when that happens). He just recommended to uninstall and reinstall access connections which I did and it now recognizes my wireless.
