Problems after clean win xp install on T42

#1 Post by minka » Tue Apr 03, 2007 7:27 am

Hi!

I decided to do a clean win xp sp2 install after I upgraded hard drive of my T42 to Seagate Momentus 7200.1 drive.
Now when I plug in my USB hard drives or flash sticks, I’m constantly having an error message “Cannot Install this hardware”. The drives are working, but are marked with a yellow sign in Device Manager.
After installing Ethernet drivers for Intel PRO1000 mobile connection Local Area Connection suddenly disables after some time.
Decided to perform a windows repair – during windows reinstallation got a blue screen error.
Now after install I had several blue screens during windows restart.
So again formatted hard drive, installed windows – the same problems. :banghead:
Went back to my old Hitachi drive – no problems.
Can anybody help me?

Sounds like driver problems to me...particularly since the Hitachi works fine when reinstalled.

It may be that when you loaded Win XP onto the Seagate you also loaded all new drivers and I've found that in itself can create problems.

I'm more of a novice with hardware but I've fixed a couple of similar problems to what you report by reverting to older drivers...solved BSD problems by rolling back my ATI video driver, fixed a nagging wifi problem by rolling back to older driver...I have intermittent problems with USB that I can temporarily remedy by swapping drivers around...

But you may have a basic problem with the driver for the Seagate HDD... I would check with Seagate and see what they say...otherwise I would play around with the drivers, maybe even copy over the driver set from the Hitachi to the Seagate...

1. Please open registry editor by going to Start - Run - Regedit
2. Make a backup of the registry.
3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key.
4. Highlight the key on the left.
5. On your right side, you will see, either Lower Filter or Upper Filter or both. Delete them.
6. Reboot your computer.

That should be it.

Thanks for the advices!!!

I'm going to try this when I'll have a spare time.
So the USB problems are more due to drivers than hardware?

Yeah. Not hardware. Some say it's the 3rd party drivers making modification in the registry. Some say it's due to a specific patch from Microsoft after SP1. I'd say it's just computers! :D

Does anybody know where to get version 7.2.17.101 Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter drivers?

Does the Hitachi drive have a clean install of Windows XP? If so, the blue screens sound like a bad Seagate hard drive. If not, then it could be some compatibility issue. Try a clean XP install with the Hitachi. Alternatively, if you have recovery CDs, try them with the Seagate.

Good luck!

The easiest way to go is:

1st install xp pro

2nd install the ethernet driver

3rd install software installer.

4th connect to a the ethernet cable to the lappy and run the software installer, it will download and install the required drivers.

Important go to control panel/system/hardware/windows update and there sellect the never search windows updates for drivers option.

There you go! your system should work perfectly.

SOLVED!!!

Did a clean win xp install again. Installed older versions of the Ethernet and video drivers and no USB and Internet problems and blue screens.
