1) how much will the drive cost if i buy it from ibm?
2)can i just upgrade from the 40 gig to the 60 gig?

You can buy the same hitachi IBM drive as an oem from several web sites and then use cloning software to copy the original HD to the new one. They cost under $200 now. Get the part number, google it, and it will work great. newegg.com or mwave.com have good prices. Yes its the same "airbag" technology. Its the same drive.

IBM will charge you more for the same drive.

So far as warranty. Usually if I send something into IBM for repair, I take out the hard drive so they dont mess with it or reformat it and they just fix , if necessary, the hardware on the machine. When I get it back, I replace the hard drive. Not a problem.

If your hard drive fails (not likely) its backed up by its own warranty if you have bought it separately.

It only cost me $100 to upgrade from 40gb to 60gb when I ordered. I was originally thinking of upgrading the ram (256mb to 512mb) but changed my order when I realized it cost less for the hard drive upgade, which I decided had more value.
