Computer shut down slow
I was wondering what factors are involved in the computer shutting down. Sometimes it's pretty fast, but other times it takes a very long time. I will eve think it shut down , but in the morning, I see that it didn't power off at all and was online all night. Should it matter if I close the lid before it's off?
I almost always make sure all programs are closed out, I delete all temporary files, even the ones in my OE Deleted File.
I don't know what makes the difference from one time to the other. Could someone tell me what the problem could be?
Thanks in advance,
Sand

It should not take all night under any circumstances to shut down. Sometimes (rarely, indeed) a computer I am working on will take six or seven minutes to shut down. It is usually fine after that, so I ignore it.
Things to consider:
1. It is doing updates as it shuts down (it will tell you).
2. There is a process hung (update agents, antivirus, and so on). But these should say, and there should be a dialogue box to exit the error.
3. There are old network drives no longer active it is trying in vain to disconnect from. Check in Windows Explorer for network drives or printers that should be disconnected prior to shutdown.
4. There is an error in your OS. Very difficult to determine. Run AntiVirus to check for viruses. Run Ad-Aware to check for spyware.

If everything is ok there is a way to make it shutdown faster.
star/run/regedit/H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Control/Waitrokilltomeout/change value to 600/close everything and reboot, next time it should shutdown faster.

Thanks JDH and cmarti,
I think the only one on your list that might apply is #4 and I can try that.
I went to regedit but couldn't find anything you mention there past SYSTEM. There is a Control 1 and Control 2, but the next words do not appear under either.
Thanks,
Sandra

cmarti,
I'm sorry but so much of this is way over my head; I'm afraid if I try to 'fix' something here I may end up with worse problems, so I will just try to live with the occasional slow shut down since it's not really causing a serious problem. I was just worried that it was a symptom of something wrong with the system, or that it being on all night was not a good thing.
But thanks to everyone that offered help and if it becomes worse in the future I will look into doing something more extensive.
Thanks again,
Sand

Just did this on my Thinkpad and I'm amazed that it fixed my slow shutdown time. I wish I came across this tweak sooo much sooner. Thanks again!

cmarti,
After reading of Initial D's enthusiasm at trying the regedit thing, I tried it again and found the words I couldn't find before and changed the number. I have only shut it down once to try it, but didn't see a lot of difference, but then this problem I mentioned doesn't happen every time, only occasionally. I will only know in time if this worked, if that doesn't happen again at all.
But I forgot to ask in my last post, is it always necessary to go to Start to Shut Down, why can't you just use the Power Button on the keyboard to power off? It always goes off much faster that way. Is it just because of not saving settings, (which I don't know what that means anyway), or does it harm the system in some way?

Is that not the correct wording? I can't get it to work in my computer and couldn't find it just by searching through the regeditInitial D wrote:Wow!!!cmarti wrote:If everything is ok there is a way to make it shutdown faster.

I have not tried the tweak, but searching through my registry, I find the following:kid8 wrote:Is that not the correct wording? I can't get it to work in my computer and couldn't find it just by searching through the regedit
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout
and
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout
and
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout
I suspect the last one is the one to edit. The value I see is 20000.
