The angle at which you keep your ThinkPad open

#1 Post by devilsrejection » Fri Oct 01, 2004 10:36 pm

I am a pretty tall guy, 6 foot 3, and in order to use my laptop in my lap I have to tilt the screen back a lot.

I want to know is this safe for the cable that runs from the TP to the LCD?

I do not want this thing prematurly dying on me in 2 years just because of that lcd cable. I do not want to deal with the bullshits of having it sent to IBM for them to fix it.

My baby is only 2 months old and I would like to know, should I continue such behavior or cease it immediatly?

as far back as my lid goes, i couldn't get the lcd cable to get tight-

are you seriously worried about that? i'd be more concerned of the extra foot in drop height should the machine free itself from your clutches.

i don't think you'll have a problem- but how far back are you talking?

I clean my LCD every 2 weeks, and I have to put my LCD at 180 degrees (I put a book flush with the height of the non-lcd half of my Thinkpad behind the display for support though.) I have had my Thinkpad for 15 months, and after 30+ cleaning sessions, with a bit of pressure put on the screen, I have had no problems (knock on wood) with the screen dying, or faultering. You should be fine with the screen where it is.

that problem was fairly comon in older laptops. However, since 5 years all manufacturers (not to mention IBM!) had improved the flaw of these cables.

You can open as far as the lid goes without problem. In any case, if you still worry, think that the matter of the problem is friction. The frequency of openning and closing te lid is much worse than the angle that you open the lid.
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)
