#1 Post by rich703 » Sun Apr 15, 2007 9:00 am

Got a new T40 and am upgrading from my old T23. Tried to plug and play but does not recognize hard drive. Is there a way to make this work. techno challenged and am trying to mirror all my files from t23 to new t40. any tips? Thanks

If you just want to get the files off the t23 drive you can use a USB HD enclosure, put the drive in the enclosure and plug it in to the t40 and you be able to pull off your files. Or, if both machines are working fine just connect them via a network cable and pull the files. The t23 drive won't boot in the t40 though.

Maybe you could explain a little more about what you are trying to accomplish :) Are you trying to use an ultrabay adapter?

Yes I am trying to migrate everything from the t23 to the t40 as simply as possible. Was hoping I could just swap hardrive and go. But you are right it does not boot/not recognize when I put the 23 hardrive into the 40. Thanks

Yes I swapped t23 hardrive into the ultra bay holder on the t40.

You may want to try the following. .. It has always worked for me as I have "upgraded" Thinkpads over the years.....

1. Download the T 40 Audio and Video drivers from the thinkpad support page, and save them in a folder. Copy this folder onto your T23 HD and remember where you have put them.

2. Make a clone of your T23 drive onto your new T40 drive using Apps such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. You can do this on your old T23, or using your new T40. Whichever is convenient. The main reason you want to make a clone is to keep all your apps, files, data etc in a state that they are transferred to your new drive without any losses.

2. Insert the newly cloned drive into your T40 as the primary HD.

3. Start the computer in SAFE MODE with VGA support!!! ( Pressing F8 as the computer starts).

4. Once your computer has started ( will take a while ), the screen may look a little funny... Do not worry. Now you can install the video driver that you had downloaded. Once the driver has loaded, you can restart the computer in normal mode. The system should then go and pick up most of the drivers through PnP. Then just go to the Thinkpad support page and download all the latest drivers to replace the generic drivers that Windows had picked up by default..

Good luck !

Just so I understand fully.... when the T23 drive is in the Ultrabay Slim holder is it not recognised at all by the OS (which OS?) on your T40 drive? Or is it just not bootable?

If the T23 drive is not recognised at all when booted from the T40 drive and you are running Windows XP on the T40, go into the Windows XP "Computer Management" utility see if the drive is visible at all in in the "Disk Management" section.

If the T23 drive is visible at any level in Disk Management, then you will at least know you can probably do something with it, so post here what you can see in Disk Management.

Cheers,

Bill
