R&R Question

#1 Post by Temetka » Tue Apr 17, 2007 2:03 am

So I have 2 sets of R&R discs. The first one I made myself and is 7 discs. It was from the 40GB drive that came with my T41P. The second set I got from a member here and is 6 discs total.

I have tried both sets of discs. When trying to a factory restore, it says it's been disabled. So I choose to restore all files and settings from a backup. Both sets have recreated the hidden partition. However when I press the Access IBM button, it does NOT go into the Thinkvantage software and instead comes up with a boot menu.

I have never been able to recover XP using these discs.

Does R&R only work the same size / type of HD it was created from? Is it never going to work my 120GB HD? I'm not asking for much, just a stock reload of the factory contents on my new HD.

This is where Gateway, HP, Acer, and HP to my experience have IBM beat. Insert disc. Hit yes. Reboot. Voila, XP is up and running.

This R&R business is very confusing for what should be a relatively straightforward process. Once again I am going to have to reload using a copy XP I got from school, and it wont work with my license (OEM vs. Corporate).

So if someone could walk me through, step by step of EXACTLY how I can use my discs to return my T41P to normal operating conditions I would extremely grateful.

Thank you in advance.

/end rant.

From this thread:

Hmm...

Loaded up my XP SP2 Disc and wiped all partitions.

Rebooted off of the startup disc and chose to recover from cd. (Not factory).

Asks for disc 6 'Final C'. Copies files. Reboots.

Upon reboot up comes DOS box saying something about setting up HD. Now it's going. Its on disc 1 and at 6%. Never before have I gotten to 6% with disc 1.

It would appear that I may have solved my own problem.

/crosses fingers.

While editing this post it is now up to 11% and still on disc 1!! I think its going to work!!

EDIT: I am using the 7 disc set I made. Now I have to download the 2200bg drivers and a newer version of access connections. Now where did I put that ethernet cable....

/crosses both sets of fingers.

I have some recovery problems too...

Did you fomat the drive after deleting all partitions?
Does "fix the Master Boot Record" mean to type "fdisk /mbr"?

I have a 7CD set, but after the 4th disc it requests to remove any CD/floppy and to reboot the machine.

It boots up to press F11, then tells me there is no system found.

Never installs up to disc 7.

Any idea's?

Success!!

No. I simply deleted all partitions, then rebooted and let system restore do its thing.

Running updates now.

/going to bed, have ot be up in 4 hours.

this was worth it though.

Thanks for the link, very usefull.

I think that I miss the Startup disc.
The first disc of the 7 disc set is also bootable, so I thought that the 7 discs is all what I need.

Now I'm looking for the Startup disc for a T43.
