T40 c r a w l s when on battery

#1 Post by kidziti » Sat Oct 02, 2004 4:49 pm

My T40 slows down significantly when on battery power. The mouse pointer takes a long time to move across the screen, windows seem to open and close gradually, etc. Once I pop in the power cord, it zips along as I'm used to it doing. I did try the obvious and adjusted the battery settings to max performance but to no effect. I suspect some type of hardware failure mode - possibly the batter - may be causing this, but was wondering if anyone has heard of such a thing.

This happens sometimes to me too (T42). The weird thing is, that after I set Battery Settings to Max Performance, I verify that CPU speed is all the way up to 1.8MHz, but the symptoms you describe still persist in spite of the maxed out CPU speed.

I haven't seen this on my t42. Could it be ATI driver? I am using driver version 6.14.10.6422 downloaded from IBM site.

Actually, I haven't experienced any battery charging/stand by/speed/overheat issue that I read a lot on this forum.

I never installed the IBM Battery Maximizer software on a sp2 fresh install. If that even matters.

If you have battery maximiser installed, click on it and then remove the check mark from graphics device power management. If you don't have battery maximiser installed you can disable graphics power management in display properties.

Unless the driver has bug, ATI powerplay is great and can save about 2W on battery.

I have powerplay enabled and I don't see any slow down.

I can second that this works. I was having this same problem on my T40 -- Quake 3 was getting bad FPS when in battery mode. I went to display properties/settings/advanced/powerplay tab and de-selected powerplay and then my FPS went back to normal.

Thanks for the tip.

T4x always slower on battery power

#8 Post by t41user » Tue Dec 07, 2004 11:16 pm

It is my experience that if you set a T4x for maximum system performance when running on battery power, the system will always be a bit slower than it is when running on AC power. It is my experience that some people do not notice the difference in performance until they see a side by side comparison. I guess my experience could by atypical or wrong.

I had this problem on my T41 but the BIOS update released a couple weeks ago fixed it, it was mentioned in the release notes...

If you have the ATI 9000.. Also, make sure on your battery Maximiser that "Graphic Device Power Management" is not checked.

Mine now runs the same on battery or AC. It used to be slow like yours :)

Be sure to update the embedded controller firmware, THEN the BIOS. Make sure you are on AC power when you do this.

Also, apply the new power managment driver, and new battery maximiser...

You can get them here:
