YAHDT: Yet Another Hard Drive Thread
Well with the pending purchase of a 2nd bay HD adapter, I find myself looking at upgrading my laptop (yet again).
Right now I am running my 120GB 5400RPM drive as boot. This will be going into the 2nd bay adapter as data storage.
So here is the question:
What is the biggest, baddest 7200RPM drive known to man that will run in the T41P of Doom without any crazy 2010 weirdness or BIOS hackery. I would prefer something with16MB (or, holds breath) 32MB of Cache.
I don't have the funds for one of those flash HD's so that's not an option.
Thanks in advance.

To my information, I've not heard yet of new flash hybrid HDD drives. Toshiba is the only HDD manufacturer which offers 16MB cache drives. I'm unsure if a 7200rpm 8MB cache is faster or slower than a 5400rpm 16MB cache.
Still, the preferred choice to my is the 7K100. Are you interested in space or biggest storage?

I want the biggest storage space available WITH 7200RPM. So in other words what is the biggest (and reliable) 7200RPM drive that will work in my T41P?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Good news on both fronts.
Looking forward to getting a larger than 100GB HD at fast speeds and never have to worry about 2010 issues. Sounds great to me.

I have a T40p and I also thought of getting what you are looking for (the largest possible 7200rpm drive for the Ultrabay) that I could.
My "gut feel" tests indicated that from a performance standpoint, it was not worth it since I could discern no speed difference between having a 7200 and a 5400 in the ultrabay (not the regular HDD slot, for that slot, there was a world of difference). I ended up picking up a 160gb 5400rpm Hitachi with 60gb more than the largest 7200 disk for 80$ less with what I felt was the same performance.
Here is a snapshot of what my machine looks like now.
Bottom line was that I found that for the ultrabay, the 7200rpm drive was not worth it.

Yeah, the fast HD would go inside the machine with my current 120GB 5400RPM drive going into the ultrabay adapter.
I have triple boot set up right now, between XP, Vista and SuSE. So the 2nd HD would be to store my files.
