t42 fan error, what fan to buy?
t42 fan error, what fan to buy?
I have a t42 with the 64mb radeon 9600 chipset. This morning the computer gave me a "fan error"
what part should I buy? I see long and short fans on ebay. I opened her up before going to work but I cant recall exactly what it looked like

bronevaya,
Take a look at your laptop. The fan should have a FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) number on the fan asembly. That is part# you need.
or you can post the model number of your laptop (such as 2373 - ???) and someone can possible tell you the part number you need.
Chris
There are 2 long fans for the T42: 13N5442 and 13R2657. It is my understanding that the all those with the 1.7 mHz processor use the 13R2657. The 2 fans are installed differently. The first one has a film over the transfer pad that must be removed before it attaches to the graphics chip. It would be better if you would post your model number.
I cannot help on the which fan to purchase, but I can offer feedback on what I did to get my T42 fan error to go away. After trying tricks like spinning it with compressed air, reseating the fan plug, etc I put it back to together and hit the bottom of the computer with my hand about where the fan is located.
After that quick blow my T42 powered back on and the error has yet to come up again. That was about 5 months ago. Its worth at least trying.

That's not the CPU. The CPU is under the fan assembly.
1. Buy thermal grease.
2. Remove three screws holding fan assembly to mobo.
3. First, lift the right side of fan assembly.
4. Second, pull the fan assembly port (left side) from the left side of cpu case (where the hot air blows), just under bezel.

I normally keep at least a long fan and a short fan around here, but this week, I needed to use both my long fans to replace bad ones. Where are you located? If you want to send me your old fan (the original one you were trying to replace) I can test it. If your motherboard is bad, probably both your fans are good. If it is good, I'll send you what I paid for the last long fan I bought - $12.50 + $7 shipping.
New fans directly from IBM are $39.50 + $13.50 overnight shipping (Airborne Express).

I am not sure I could be a great help. I tend to buy used fans on eBay and test them out, but if you buy from a responsible seller, you should be able to return a non-working unit. If I buy a fan and pay for shipping to me, then ship it to you, it is not an efficient process. I was just trying to avoid your buying a third fan, when the 2 you have might be good.
