USB then powers off

My new to me T43p turns off while connected to my Bytecc USB 2.0 adapter while transferring files. Just turns off shuts down and thats it. This appears to be repeatable. Is the Bytecc drawing too much T43p power? I was using this Bytecc for a while yesterday with no problems. Used the Bytecc for some 2.5 drive transferrs and some 3.5 drive transfers. The 3.5 drive transfers use external power.

Does your USB cable have (2) plugs so you can plug into (2) ports on your PC? This splits the power draw from the PC and is supposed to prevent this kind of problem. Each port can safely put out 500ma so total current draw of the USB enclosure is limited to 1a, even with double plug cable.

If the cable does have (2) plugs, are you using both? If you are but are still having problems, my next guess would be one of the ports on your PC may be deteriorating...just a guess though.

Only one plug on this Bytecc BT-300 the handy dandy all in one hard drive must have item. Have not had any trouble before and used this all day yesterday. This is the first time I connected the BT-300 to this 160gb Seagate PATA laptop drive though.

There is no way to add additional power because like I said this is not an enclosure it is just a adapter to connect drives to USB.

I haven't looked at the Seagate specs though this is a regular standard everyday item.

This was first hit I found for Seagate external drive with double plugged USB cable (scroll to bottom)... I would go to local electronics store and get the double plug, on one end there is a single plug which goes into your Bytecc BT-300 and then plug the other end, with (2) plugs, into both USB ports.

edit: I looked at the Bytecc ad again and it looks like the USB plug is hardwired into the Bytecc so you'll need a USB extender connector so you can connect to the double plug USB cable...or better yet, just get a USB 2.0 enclosure...they are cheap and most already have double plug included...

It really sounds like the drive is pulling more than 500ma through the Bytecc, which will shut your USB port down very quickly. The bigger capacity drives definitely draw more power...

I have other hard drive enclosures to try this with. I like the Bytecc because of the flexibility of one item to handle PATA 2.5 & 3.5 and SATA. When I work with computers all day this item is invaluable to me.

With my A2xp's I always started the TP with the battery so the processor was always at full speed then removed the battery. Since most of the time I use my TP's on AC I still have battery power after all these years. I picked up my first one in November of 2000 and that battery still works. I believe because I always and continue to do this. The reason why I am bringing this up is because I just received my new to me T43p on Tuesday and I started to do the same thing. I run the T43p without the battery. This is when the computer shuts down. After I realized this I started the computer without the battery and without anything connected shut down before the Windows splash screen. Should I call for service?

I looked closely at my AC adapter and may have found the problem.

After many years of TP's and adapters I may have just been using an underpowed adapter. I had in place an 02K6555 3.6a adapter and my new to me T43p came with the 92P1021 4.5a adapter. I switched to the 4.5a adapter. Hopefully this will solve my problem.

I am testing now and report back.
