did you remove the screw below the optical drive? if not, the drive is locked in the bay and can't be removed. by default this screw isn't mounted but I already got used t4x laptops where someone (for what purpose ever) had mounted it before.

No I did not. It was in. Now it's out, and so is the combo drive.

i have been sitting there in front of the t40 the same stupid as you as i tried to remove the drive the first time on a machine where the screw was in. it lasted two days till i figured out that there was nothing wrong with the ultrabay just a stupid screw was sitting in a place where i didn't expect it :-D

The screw isn't supposed to be there, unless you put is a torx screw (called a security screw). People who work on the machines without enough knowledge just fill all the holes with screws. I've even seen screws put into the air hole in the bottom, that is there to reduce the chance of condensation.

I had a problem related to the security screw that holds the Ultrabay device in the bay a couple of months ago. The screw was OUT yet the eject lever did not release when it should have. It took several mintues before I realized that the threaded insert that is mounted in the eject lever had come loose and dropped down, preventing the lever from moving.

@richk: i know that. as i wrote i don't think this screw serves any purpose but on a machine i bought and which had been used before this had been filled in....

btw this are not always torx but sometimes inbus too.
