Upgrading my T43 1871
Upgrading my T43 1871
I have a T43 1871 which is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth.
Currently it has the following spec:
Pentium M 730 1.6GHz
512Mb DDRII-533 (PC4200)
40Gb
DVDRW
Is it worth me spending money to upgrade it, or am I better of buying a new C2D T60 and selling the T43? How much do you lot reckon I'll get for me T43?
+ 1Gb DIMM - £35
+ 120Gb HDD - £50
+ Pentium M 760-780 - ?? (would I really notice the difference?)

With respect to memory, Windows XP SP2 likes to have 512Mb minimum, and I know from helping users that more memory on an SP2 machine will help performance. I use 768Mb and that is entirely workable, but 1Gb would be fine as well.
The thing on your machine is likely the hard drive. The biggest performance booster I did on my T41 was go to a 7200-rpm hard drive. Big difference.

How has using a 7200 affected battery life / noise / heat for you?jdhurst wrote:With respect to memory, Windows XP SP2 likes to have 512Mb minimum, and I know from helping users that more memory on an SP2 machine will help performance. If you use a 7K100 you won't notice any difference, the only difference would be the performance increase, believe me i have use it on a T40,770Z,600X and now on my X60 the drive is great!KuniD wrote: How has using a 7200 affected battery life / noise / heat for you?
X32/2.0GHZ/2GB/ENGENIUS EMP-8602+S 600mw mini pci/WD 250GB
X60/1.83GHZ/2GB/Atheros/7K100
X60/1.83GHZ/2GB/Atheros/7K100
I use a 7K100 as well. noise is not noticeable above my old Hitatchi, heat is no worse, and battery life is the same. The bonus is now I have a portable 60GB HDD which needs no external PSU!cmarti wrote:If you use a 7K100 you won't notice any difference, the only difference would be the performance increase, believe me i have use it on a T40,770Z,600X and now on my X60 the drive is great!KuniD wrote: How has using a 7200 affected battery life / noise / heat for you?

No noise and no heat other than normal which is quiet all around. More battery - who knows? But I can say this: The battery slowly but inexorably expires over time because it is a chemical device much faster than any impact from the hard drive.
I will no longer own any kind of laptop computer unless it has a 7200-rpm drive or faster. Slower drives have never cut it for me. Some persons are willing to sacrifice speed for storage, but I need the speed, and storage remains ample.
