Docking Station Help

#1 Post by wanna_IBM » Mon Oct 04, 2004 6:39 pm

I am looking for a station that I can leave all my cords plugged into and just connect and disconnect the laptop when I want to take it with me so I dont have to keep hooking everything back up again. What do you recommend for a T42p laptop? I am on a tight budget since I bought the T42p..lol.

Sounds like a port replicator should do you fine. They are $179 new from IBM but you can find a ton of them on eBay for $79 or less. I just bought two for my thinkpad for $79 each.

Port Replicator II - get that and not the original Port Replicator since you have a T4x series.

I'd search e-Bay and don't pay over $100.

There are a few choices:

Port replicator (not II) the cheapest way, I have bought for $15 shipped on e-bay (but it doesn't have integrated power supply, so you will need to use your AC adapter

Next would be the Thinkpad Dock, which has integrated power supply, UltraBay2000, 2 pmcia slots, eth and modem feedthough, external monitor port, ps2, 2 usbs, printer, dvi and PCI slot. I had this one from e-bay for $30 shipped. I think this is the best option for the money

Apparently, the original port replicator will not work with the T4x systems (physically wont fit - see previous posts on this) so it has to be the more expensive port replicator II. I suspect the same applies to the ThinkDock (ie you will need the dock II). E-bay is your best bet.

Or you could try a non-IBM USB port replicator (just pull out one USB cable and take your computer with you) - might be able to pick up one of these for $10 on ebay.
