I find myself shopping just months before the Oct 04 models are released, but that is not the issue I seek help on. I want a higher resolution dockable machine, and that leads me to the t42 vs the t42p. I have an r40 and the dock II only somewhat limited in the higher resolutions. Maybe 1600x1200 is beyond any docked laptop, so what can I expect on each. This will be a second monitor when docked, probably 17 inch not yet purchased.

I'm not sure I understand your post completely but here goes:

If you need a higher resolution setting for an external monitor you can use a different ATI driver to enable those higher resolutions. I'm sure someone else will chime in here. It might even be possible on your R40 but I have no experience with those.
