T41P CPU Upgrade and heat questions

#1 Post by Temetka » Tue May 01, 2007 3:04 am

I just installed my shiny new 2.0GHz CPU. It is an intel SL7EM CPU. Running super pi to 4 million places and using mobile meter for initial performance / heat benchmarks.

took superpi 4m 34 s to calculate.

Mobile meter reports a max temp reached of 62 degrees celcius.

check this intel sheet.

It has a max temp (from what I understand) of 100 degrees Celcius.

My fan is on, and is slightly louder than before. Now about 10 minutes after my superpi run, it's at 50 degrees.

I used Arctic Silver 5 and a nice thin even coat over the CPU die.

So am I good to go, or do I need to check a few more things.

Thanks in advance.

Oh and yes, my system does feel more of 'teh snappy'

fan just cycled down right now. 1 minute later.

i think it should be ok, just make sure you did not apply to much AS5. Undervolt the CPU if you want to drop the temps a little bit more.

Hi,

I'd also say you are good to go. For you to compare, on my T40 with a PM 1.8 overclocked to 2.016Ghz (with setfsb) and with memory running CAS2 I can do the superpi 4M calculation in 3m 54s, and my max temp is 65 ºC at the end. So your temps are good and the performance is more or less as expected.

I'd actually expect it to be faster than 4'34". 3'54" sounds about right. I got 4'21" with a 1.8GHz Dothan.

I am going to re-run the benchmark. I am in the process of downloading 3dmark '50 and fixing a friends box at the moment.

Just sitting here downloading 3dmark and listening to the Dell's optical drive. Fired up mobile meter again. I am idling at 54degrees. Seems a tad warm. I do have the long fan. Besides undervolting, are there any other hardware changes I can make to increase the cooling performance of my rig?

Other Q's:

How would I go about undervolting, and what specifically does it do?

Is there a better fan, say from a T43p I could use?

Thanks again.

AARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I just wasted 30 minutes to download 3dmark 05 only to find out it doesn't work with my GPU!! Grr...

Now I am downloading 3dmark 03.

I am going to do a trial run, then update my drivers, and do another test run.

Why would 03 work?

Something about needing a newer version of pixel shader.

Hey,

I isntalled NHC 2.0. Great program. Now I am running at 46degrees idle and around 50 with basic apps (like firefox). CPU throttling is much quicker and more responsive now. I really like this app.

I am trying to update my VGA drivers, and for some unknown reason I simply cannot install the version available for download from ATI. I guess that means no Catalyst for me and I will have to go to Lenovo and download some updated drivers from them.

This chip is great.

I told NHC to warn me at 85deg and shutdown at 92deg. What do you think of that temp range?

Oh and first run of 3dmark 03 is 2557. Kind of low IMO. So I am looking to some other options. I cant think of any reason why a BIOS update would increase CPU speed (or remove any unknown latencies).

Try the Omega Drivers.

Yeah, I could go that route. I was just hoping that since I am running XP and not Vista that I could standard non-hacked drivers.

I just installed directx (stupidly forgot to) so will re-bench in a minute. Right now VPC is busy setting up NT 4.0 Workstation for me.

Temetka,

Your best bet to improve 3dmark performance is to overclock the graphics chip. Those mobile chips have great potential there. You can do that with NHC also. But be warned, and watch out the GPU temp and the CPU temps even when doing this, since these CPUs tend to get very hot AND they heat up also the CPU through the heatsink... Use ATITool or ATI Tray tools.

Re. your super_pi performance, I agree with dr_st. Unless you were doung something in background your scores are a bit low for a 2Ghz chip.

You can use standard drivers (as long as these are ATI Mobility drivers), but the Omega drivers can improve performance and add a few tweaks for possible compatibility problems of the FireGL with various games (for example, 3DMark05 will work). They also come with a few useful tools (ATI tray tool, which you can use to quickly change settings, overclock, etc).

DirectX 9.0C comes preinstalled with XP SP2.

Yep, it's possible. ATI Tray Tool has the ability to check for artifacts, so you know when you've been pushing the chip too high.

Now for some other weirdness. Let me state that I do not believe my CPU upgrade is causing the problem I am going to talk about below.

I can no longer put my laptop into standby mode.

"The device driver for the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update the driver.'

This started happening after installing NHC.

Suggestions anyone?
