T41P memory upgrade issue

#1 Post by shlammed » Wed May 02, 2007 12:03 pm

Hello, I have a user who was recently upgraded from 2 x 512MB sticks to 2 x 1GB sticks.

The BIOS and Windows XP both recognize the 2GB of memory properly. However, with the new RAM, when he runs the applications he works on everyday, it freezes the laptop.

I took the new RAM out and stuck the old RAM in and everything worked fine.

I ran memtest on each stick for over and hour and there were no errors. I figured I may as well update the BIOS while I'm at it.

I'm hoping the BIOS was the problem, so I guess I'm basically trying to get a head start here if it's not.

He hasn't been back to his desk yet and before he gets back and (hopefully not) tells me it crashed again, what else may I try?

Thanks!

Look in the event log and see if there is a message. Are all the modules PC2700? Did you run the memtest in the same machine?

I have a similar problem. My T41p used to run with one 1gb original stick and one 512mb aftermarket stick. Worked fine. Bought one 1Gb kingston-stick that by itself or with a 512mb stick works great, but not together with the original 1gb stick. Running with two original OEM-sticks work fine though.

Please try running XP with ONLY the new stick inserted and wait to see if it still freezes.

I doubt it will freeze like that. But if it does then that's the case of bad memory. Otherwise I think ,the both modules are simply not compatible with each other.

They have already ruled out that both 1GB modules aren't compatible with each other. This is another way of isolating the problem, whether it is really a bad stick or not. Next step would be to try the same new stick on another machine.

Thinkpad machines have been known for being very picky with certain brands of memory, that was just my assumption based on that fact.

Yeah you said it. That's why I almost always stick with OEMs. :D
