Videos And Music Skips

When i play music or a video, its starts normally but after a few seconds it skips/jumps. it also happens to my cursor when am just searching the internet.

any ideas

You could start task manager and see if anything funny is running

Machine specs? What OS? Media player of choice? etc.

My first guess is that you should upgrade the RAM and then defrag your hard drive. 256MB of RAM is pretty skimpy for what you are attempting to do. I wouldn't be surprised if you are hitting the hard drive a lot, which will slow the machine down.

yes depending on which kind of soft he has installed 256 might get in the way of music playback. get at least 512mb additional ram, i would recommend.

anti-virus software for example is known for draining system resources.

256MB and Windows XP is cutting it pretty thin. I'd also vote for a little more memory in order to prevent disk swapping.

Press <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> to bring up Task Manager and click the Performance tab. Look at the CPU usage and see if its 100% when the music skips/freezes. If it does, click on the Processes tab and look for what's hogging the CPU.
