T42 burner problems (uj812)

#1 Post by jamesm » Tue May 08, 2007 5:27 am

Hi
I've been having trouble with the dvd burner on my t42 recently. It still seems to read fine, but won't burn any more. I'm using dvd-rs that have worked on it before, but I now get a i/o device error when I insert the discs. I called IBM and they sent out a new burner but this doesn't work either. I've used this type of dvd-r before but I'm wondering if it's a problem with the dvds..

Does anyone know of a type of dvd-r that definitely works with these drives, ideally one that's available to purchase from the UK? Or any other ideas about what could be going wrong? I've updated firmware etc.

Thanks a lot

The problems looks software related. Do this if it works for you:

1. Go to Start
2. Right click My Computer
3. Select Manage from the resulting menu
4. In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager
5. In the right pane, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
6. Identify your CD/DVD drive in the expanded menu and right click the appropriate drive
7. Select Properties
8. In the Properties windows, click the Advanced Settings tab
9. In the Transfer Mode box that represents your CD/DVD drive (typically Device 1), open the drop down menu and select PIO Only
10. Click OK and exit all windows.

If this does not resolve your issue, then you will need to go back using the above procedure and change the Device 1 in step #9 back to "DMA if available". Then, change Device 0 to "PIO Only" in the Transfer Mode box.
I use Phillips 16X 4.7GB DVD-R, make sure you always slow burn at 2-4X speed. Also, try to get another brand and test it on your machine.

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply, that's great. I got as far as expanding the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers but I wasn't sure which one represented the dvd drive. What I have is 'Intel(R) 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24 CA', Primary IDE Channel' and 'Secondary IDE channel'. Both of thse have the advanced tab as you describe it in the properties window - is there an easy way of working out which one it is? Should I just try the steps you mentioned for both of them?

How many drives in total you have?

Not really, was just wondering something.

Perform that procedure on Secondary IDE channel.

Thanks for that, I've tried it, but still no luck. When I put a disc in it whirrs a few times and clicks, then when I try to click into the drive in my computer it says 'D:/ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error'
Do you think trying new media is a sensible next step? I could also restore to factory settings but I was hoping not to..
Are these the philips dvds that have worked for you?

If the problem is only with that particular brand and you're able to play any other dvd, lets say a movie or something, then I'll advise against factory settings. Try another brand first, if things don't work out then factory restore is always an option.

That's exactly the brand I use.

Pre-recorded dvds seem to be fine, but if I use one of the dvd-rs that don't work and burn content to it using my desktop it still won't work on the laptop.. I'll get some of those philips dvds and give those a shot. It just seems weird that these same dvd-rs used to work fine on the t42

Thanks again for all your help, I'll let you know how I get on

Ya, sounds strange, but if you've been only buying that particular brand for years, then perhaps they could've changed something in manufacturing material.

My old Z60m had similar problem with reading blank dvd's, but of a particular brands only. But Phillips dvd's worked on it perfectly, I hope it will for you too.

You're very welcome.
