T40 shuts down

#1 Post by lrtrotter » Wed May 09, 2007 1:02 pm

I just purchased a used T40. It periodically and abruptly shuts down, as if the power were cut. It happens both an AC and battery.

I suspect overheating because the fan speeds up significantly before a shutdown. Often seems to happen during disk-intensive activity. Also, it hasn't shut down when I am in power-conservation mode.

I've read many of the overheating posts. So, I removed the keyboard and cleaned the fan and cpu with compressed air - no improvement.

It appears to have a long fan assembly and I noticed that what looks like a silver-colored tab/ connector on the far right end of the fan assembly is not attached to the motherboard

1. Should the fan assembly be attached to the motherboard by the connector? If so, what type of screw can I use.
2. The unit is still under warranty, so should I just go ahead and contact Lenovo?

One of the brass footings on the keyboard presses that against the case and is screwed in from the bottom with one of the 10mm screws.

Thanks, I'll check tonight to be sure there's a screw making contact with the case.

Let IBM/Lenovo figure it out - that's why you pay a premium price for a Thinkpad. You'll only be without it for 4-5 days.
