T42 with vertical line on screen

#1 Post by boon » Thu May 10, 2007 1:48 pm

hi

a friend of mine using the thinkpad T42 currently running into a problem of the screen. There is a vertical line in the middle of the screen. I think the worst case is the video card on the motherboard. What do you guys think?

thanks

You sure it is not a row of dead pixels. If you have warranty, let them deal with it.

It is either the LCD display, the display ribbon cable or the motherboard has flexed and the video chipset is loose.
Do you have any warranty? http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/system ... nd=5000008

If it is a full vertical line about 1mm wide, from the top to the bottom then it is your LCD screen.

No the machine only have 1 year I believe. The laptop is to be 1 and a half years old to be precise, and was bought new condition.

it is about 1mm vertical line from top to bottom. The vertical line appears to be right in middle of the screen, a bit of blue color of some sort. It is not a deal pixel as it is thicker though.

I think it is possible to repair it but afraid it might be the motherboard which I guess is not worth it. LCD may be a bit pricy but probably still worth it. I guess I just hope it is the inverter only hehe. I may try to post a pic later but laptop isn't here.

It isn't the inverter. The inverter only converts the DC out of the power supply into the A/C power needed by the tube. You either have a bad LCD or the video chip is sick. The way to tell is you connect an external monitor. If the line appears on n the external monitor, it is the motherboard that is bad. If the line doesn't appear on the ext. monitor, it is almost certainly a bad LCD.

It would only take a minute to check your warranty with the link I provided above, Then you would know if it is in warranty or not. You might be surprised, it has happened before.
