What Txx to upgrade to?

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Fri May 11, 2007 7:36 pm

I have a T23 with a 1.2GHz processor, RAM maxed out, etc. I use it for video editing, and though it is fine for simple stuff, there are times when it just doesn't have quite enough horsepower.

What would I have to upgrade to to get about twice the effective processing power that I have now?

Thanks,

Nolo

Methinks a T42 w/64MB of VRAM would be perfect for you. A 1.8GHz or faster proc with 1GB of RAM and a 60GB or 80GB 7200RPM drive would prove nice and speedy with XP Pro.

If you are looking at Vista, I would suggest a T43/p or T60.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.
Old:
E6520, Precision M4400, D630, Latitude E6520
ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U
IBM Thinkpad X61T, T61, T43, X41T, T60, T41P, T42, T410, X301

Depends if you plan to stick to Win'XP or Vista for the next few years... (Vista support is still patch, program-wise and drivers).

1) If you plan to stick with Win'XP, get a T42/p.

T42 has:
-S-video output built-in to T42 (the T60 DOES NOT have this!)
-No 2010 Error when you swap hard drive (T43 has this problem)
-Can burn its own Product Recovery CDs (T41 and below can't)

T60 has:
-Dual core CPU (which may improve your video editing performance--but i've never tried this myself...)
-No S-video output

Mind you, T60 on Vista you still need to boost your RAM to make your notebook snappy...

Look for the (rarer) T42 with the ATI Fire GL video card with 128MB RAM, since you want to do video-editing.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Those are indeed rare, and expensive if you see one on ebay.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

I find that interesting. I burned my own set of CD's just fine using Rescue and Recovery on the machine you see in my sig.
