Hard disk swap question. Help please.

#1 Post by amrav » Fri May 11, 2007 9:21 pm

Gurus,

I am trying to upgrade the hard drive on my T41.

I have a 2.5 inch external enclosure,

My question is about acronis true image, Can I make an image of my old t41 hard drive onto my desktop hard drive and then transfer it again onto to the new t41 hard drive ?

Does it work ?

Thanks in advance.

I have made images and restored desktops without any trouble but with the separate partitions on the ThinkPad drive you may have trouble. It can't hurt to try.

What I have had success with is to move your new drive into place. Place your old drive in the enclosure and then run Acronis. When I tried to clone without moving the drives I received the deadly blinking cursor in the left hand corner.

You have a better chance if you run Acronis on the laptop, and not mount the disk on the desktop. The Thinkpad uses a different partitioning scheme and Acronis has a "fix" to recognize it is running on a thinkpad and builds the new disk accordingly.

Just in case, also get hold of 'Partition Magic', in the older version 8 from Powerquest, i.e. from before it was screwed over by Symantec.
The combination of Acronis and PM is almost unbeatable.

I have 2 external USB 2.5" cases for just such purposes.
Unfortunately I can't remember how I transferred my last ThinkPad HD.
